Endorsement Quote: "In order to tackle the housing crisis before us, we need to move away from the status quo that created and perpetuated the crisis in the first place and, instead, seek bold, ambitious, and transformative ideas that will fundamentally change and improve housing and housing affordability in Ottawa. The 'Starts with Home' campaign platform provides effective solutions and a constructive framework for City Council to genuinely and properly address the challenges of the housing and homelessness crisis in Ottawa in a just, equitable, and beneficial manner."

1. Stop the Loss ✔️Tenants Protections: "Renovictions and demovictions have been notorious tactics used by landlords that have displaced tenants and exacerbated the housing crisis. Implementing restrictions and regulations to these practices, providing tenants with the information and resources about their rights, and re-housing displaced tenants at same rate of rent would serve to alleviate this issue." ✔️Housing Acquisition: "A non-profit housing acquisition strategy would serve to preserve and prevent loss of affordable housing from being converted to higher priced or luxury housing, support the growing non-profit housing sector as part of the solution to the housing crisis, and guarantee housing as a human right."
2. Create More ✔️Inclusionary Zoning: "One of the best tools the City has at its disposal in addressing the housing crisis is inclusionary zoning to compel developers to build mixed-income housing and include truly affordable housing in their developments for those with low to moderate income, those on OW and/or ODSP, and other marginalized and disadvantaged groups that are disproportionately vulnerable to housing insecurity." ✔️Increased Budget: "The City must also be committed to play a direct role in tackling the housing crisis which has to include significant investment on our part to reduce homelessness and the housing registry waitlist and must also, as they are disproportionately impacted by the housing crisis and housing insecurity, particularly include and involve Indigenous input in decision making as well as empower and elevate Indigenous-led housing initiatives."
3. Preserve the Quality ✔️Landlord Licensing: "Requiring landlords to be registered and licensed would increase the quality of well-maintained and safe rental properties and responsible and responsive landlords by providing the city with the capacity for greater oversight and ability to enforce standards." ✔️Ombudsperson: "Appointing an independent watchdog to ensure housing commitments and responsibilities are met, the rights of tenants are respected, and violations are promptly investigated and redressed would provide a vital layer of accountability and protection in housing."
